Project meeting 10-13-08

Anouncements:

  • We will be requesting $200 this week for lower La Cumbre project legal procedings.
  • Aaron has clearance to return to El Salvador, although he may not be able to immediately make it to the community.
  • It’s time to start working on our travel application. (We’re actually past the deadline already, so this is high priority)

West Coast conference-(Scott)

  • There were workshops on project design, chapter management, etc.
  • Our chapter is very focused on water, while in general EWB works on all kinds of sustainable systems.

Group breakout:

  1. Design: Tank options:
  • metal has corrosion and lightning issues, while ferrocement looks promising.  We should incorporate a valve at the bottom for sludge release. We could also build two separate tanks (master and slave) if it would be easier.Round, concave roofs are also an option, although harder to construct and clean.
  • Overflow: in the past we have used first flush pipes with weep drains at bottom in conjunction with an overflow line.
  • Assumptions for approximate calculations: 10-possibly 30 people served. 5 houses, 5-7 people/house? 50L/person/day.  There is a flat spot spot for tank near two houses, but we may have limited space if we build in additional locations.

2. Public Health:
