EWB General meeting 10/01/08
Meeting began with introduction of officers
Club background
· We do both international and local humanitarian work
· Not only engineers, we need all different majors
· Overview of our meeting schedule. Emphasized that members don’t need to feel obligated to participate in everything.
· Fifteen dollar fee
Different projects within EWB:
· Sustainable energy initiative (Nikhil)
o New website up. Can be found by searching “OSU SEI” on google.
o Working on a biodiesel project with intent of converting a bus
· Fiji project
o OSU alumni work at this location through the peace corp.
o Village there runs off of diesel, they want to improve upon this either with a replacement (i.e. microhydro) or biodiesel.
o Meetings on Thursdays.
· El Salvador project
o We have implemented rain water catchments and a spring-gravity fed system. This has been going on for several years. Extra work outside of meetings is required to make the projects work. A few trips are planned this year. Meetings are on Mondays in Gilmore 234.
· Wind turbine project-student sustainability
o Project started last year to put wind turbines somewhere on campus to generate power and raise awareness of sustainable energy options.
o An anemometer has been set up to test for effectiveness of turbines.
· All existing projects were started because someone initiated them. We are open to new projects.
Project selection committee: Designed to decide on a new project once we finish working in El Salvador. Anyone can join.
Appointed position openings:
· Taking Jesse’s place as the Student Sustainability coordinator
· Webmaster/IT
· We are open to other suggestions for new positions.
We also need help with PR and especially fundraising.
· Jessica: talked about PR.
o We need a little more work towards raising awareness of our group. This includes on campus, with local businesses, etc.
· Evan-Fundraising is the one thing everybody needs to become involved in at least a little bit.
o The upcoming banquet (Oct. 24) is our biggest fundraiser. Everyone was encouraged to volunteer their time (or convince their parents to go).
o Brainstorm possible fundraisers in groups.
